K. E. M. Hospital Research Centre has a fully established and computerized Hematology Laboratory, which has been operational since 25 years. It is the only laboratory in Pune with a Platelet Aggregometer to diagnose rare platelet function defects like Glanzmann's Thromboasthaenia, Bernard Soulier Syndrome, von Willebrande's Disease, etc.

The unit maintains the highest standards of Quality Control by participating in external quality control programmes.

Our laboratory is well equipped with following instruments:

Cell Counters
Hemoglobin electrophoresis set-up
Spectrophotometer
Coagulometer
Set up for coagulation factor assays
Platelet Aggregometer
Fluoroscent microscope with photographic attachment
Set up for Thromphophilia work ups.

Research Projects Undertaken:

Study of the effect of maternal anemia on cord blood haemoglobin, iron and Ferritin status.
Bone Marrow trephine biopsy study in patients of chronic renal failure with special reference to serum Ferritin.
A study of Lupus Anticoagulant in different diseases.
Study of the hematological parameters in persons infected with HIV, including Bone marrow studies wherever possible.
Incidence of anticardiolipin antibodies in various disorders
Study of Hpylori incidence in patients of gastritis and its correlation with hematological parameters and levels of serum B12 and Folic Acid.
Interleukin 6: A sensitive parameter for early diagnosis of neonatal sepsis.
Study of Hematological changes in wilsous disease.
Study of Lupus anticoagulant in different diseases.
Clinico – pathological correlations of thrombocytopenia

Routine including paediatric Hematology cases.
Anemias i.e Deficiency Anemias, Hemolytic disorders, Haemoglobinopathies, Aplasias.
Haemato-Oncology i.e Leukemias, Lymphomas, Myeloproliferative disorders and plasma cell dyscrasias.
Bleeding and clotting disorders including Thrombocytopenias, Hemophilias.
Von Willebrande’s disease, etc
Miscellaneous i.e. PUOs, storage disorders and infiltrative disorder.

Complete work ups for cases coagulation and thrombotic disorders including factor assays
Diagnosis of Leukemias including cytochemistry i.e. LAP score, PAS, Peroxidas and NSE

Conducting Bone Marrow Aspirations and Biopsies
