Background

Khetepathar, a remote hamlet under Gangapur Kh village in Maharashtra, faces numerous challenges due to its geographic location, lack of basic infrastructure, and limited access to healthcare services.

Mrs. XYZ, a 23-year-old resident of the village, shared her insights about the difficulties faced by the community and the potential benefits of improving healthcare access through the KEM Hospital Research Centre's (KEMHRC) initiatives supported by the Infosys Foundation.

Community Profile & Livelihood Challenges

Mrs. XYZ, who lives with her husband and two-month-old son, explained that the primary occupation of the village is agriculture, which is highly dependent on rainfall. The lack of consistent rainfall and the difficult terrain limit agricultural activities, particularly during the summer months, and contribute to severe water shortages.

Moreover, Khetepathar is geographically isolated, lacking an independent Gram Panchayat, and residents must travel to Gangapur Kh for administrative tasks. The absence of a proper transportation system further complicates access to essential services such as healthcare, forcing villagers to walk long distances to nearby villages for medical treatment.

Healthcare Challenges in the Hamlet

The community's healthcare situation is dire, as Khetepathar lacks any healthcare facilities. Residents usually visit government hospitals in Ghodegaon or Manchar for treatment, but the lack of transportation makes these visits burdensome.

Key challenges identified:

  • Lack of healthcare infrastructure: No health center or ASHA worker available in the village.
  • Transportation barriers: Absence of public transport forces villagers to walk long distances for medical care.
  • Reliance on home remedies: Minor ailments such as colds, coughs, and fevers are treated with home remedies like ajwain steam therapy, as many villagers cannot afford to travel for basic care.
  • Maternal health concerns: Expectant mothers often have to travel long distances for institutional deliveries, which involves staying at the hospital long before their due date.
  • Menstrual health challenges: Although sanitary pads are preferred over cloth, they are not available locally and must be brought from other villages.

Suggested Interventions

Mrs. XYZ suggested that establishing a government health center in the village or equipping ASHA workers with essential medicines would significantly improve healthcare access. With limited access to medical supplies and equipment, villagers are left to rely on home remedies for basic health needs.

She emphasized the importance of providing basic medical equipment such as:

  • Blood pressure monitors
  • Sugar testing kits
  • Tools for anemia screening

These would help address health concerns locally without the need for long and costly travel.

Mrs. XYZ also highlighted that villagers prefer government hospitals over private ones due to their affordability, though the lack of nearby healthcare facilities and the cost of travel remain barriers to accessing care.

KEMHRC's Role & Community Impact

As a trained SNEH worker with KEMHRC, Mrs. XYZ expressed optimism about the positive impact of KEMHRC's initiatives in improving healthcare services for Khetepathar. She believes that with better access to essential healthcare equipment and services, the villagers would be able to address their health concerns locally.

Health awareness sessions for adolescent girls, pregnant women, and children would also be highly beneficial in improving knowledge about maternal health and nutrition.

She praised the efforts of KEMHRC, supported by the Infosys Foundation, for their potential to bring essential healthcare services closer to the people of Khetepathar, thus improving the community's overall health and well-being.

Conclusion

Khetepathar hamlet faces significant challenges related to healthcare access, transportation, and the availability of essential services. Mrs. XYZ's insights underline the urgent need for basic healthcare infrastructure, proper training for local healthcare workers like ASHA workers, and the provision of medical supplies to improve access to care in remote villages.

The initiatives led by KEMHRC, with the support of the Infosys Foundation, hold the potential to address these gaps and improve the quality of life for the people of Khetepathar by making healthcare more accessible and reducing the burden on residents.

The interviewer thanked the respondent for her time and valuable inputs.

“With better access to essential healthcare equipment and services, the villagers would be able to address their health concerns locally.”
